Put Yourself in the Film
When a member of our church building prepares to serve a mission, he or she is oftentimes asked to speak in their home congregation simply before leaving. JMoney was asked to speak terminal Dominicus. TMan, DLish, and BRizzle all came dwelling to hear her and to see her earlier she leaves.
Figuring when HDawg and GKatt would be eligible to serve, factoring in the expected length of their missions and possible overlap, we realized that this would probably exist the last time that our whole family would exist together for four years. Yes, that's right. Four years .

Equally pleased as I am that they choose to put their own ambitions on hold to step out into the unknown and dear and help others around the world (TMan served in Puerto Rico, BRizzle in Iowa, and JMoney is heading to the Dominican Commonwealth), it is always bloodshot to run into them get out.
With that in mind, it was imperative that we brand time for a family photograph. Easier said than done.
The Conundrum
BRizzle came home late Fri dark and would be leaving Sunday evening around dinnertime. TMan and DLish flew in noon Sat and were scheduled to leave early afternoon Mon. That gave us roughly thirty hours with everyone home. Throw into the mix HDawg'southward graduation party Sat dark, Cory'southward parents in town, and Seminary (early morning faith grade) graduation Sun afternoon and our window of opportunity was pocket-sized indeed.
We warned Cory's parents and other family unit that, though they were welcome to hang out at our house all solar day Sunday after church and stay for lunch and dinner, we would be bowing out for a couple of hours for photos. And we did.

The kids had been in contact with each other trying to decide on a colour scheme for the portraits. They had decided on blues, merely when nosotros accidentally dressed for church in a palette of navy and burgundy, we decided nosotros liked it.
In talking about possible locations for the portraits, TMan chimed in with a asking for ruby rocks. It is Colorado after all! There is a nearby posh housing surface area with homes nestled among large rock formations and so we decided to try there.
Arrowhead Golf game Course
At the gated entrance to the community, Cory explained to the guard what nosotros were hoping for and he directed united states to Arrowhead Golf Course. I'grand non 100% sure that we were supposed to be there, especially walking near the greens, merely no one threw us out, none of usa got pegged with golf balls, and the rocks are cute.

At present, being a self-taught lensman, and knowing how expensive professional photographers can be, and knowing that most of our spare cash is tied upward in kids' teaching and missions right now, I chose to take the pictures myself. The tricky part about taking photos with yourself in them is, of grade, getting in them. Fortunately, yous don't have to use the set-the-timer-and-run method anymore; there are more elegant options.
Remote-Controlled Trigger
Yous can buy remote-controlled triggers to burn down off your camera. I use the Vello FreeWave Fusion Basic FWB-24 Wireless Trigger Organisation for Canon. Just make sure the batteries are fresh. You'll notice that in whatsoever photograph that I am in, one of my hands is subconscious. That'south the hand holding the remote trigger.

The photographic camera settings for the above motion-picture show were actually non the ones I intended and information technology frustrated me when I realized information technology. I had chosen settings and dialed them in on manual, only I must have knocked the dial to discontinuity priority (AV on my camera) when I put the photographic camera on the tripod. I was worried that with the selected discontinuity setting, those in the back row would exist out of focus. Fortunately this was non the case. I did intend the rocks to exist in sharp focus, just the more I look at the picture, the more than I like the rocks out of focus. This leaves our family as the obvious discipline of the photograph.
Flirt with the Camera
Since BRizzle and GKatt hadn't had a formal portrait in a few years, I spent a few minutes shooting each of them. For these 2, it's hard to coax out a natural smile. I told BRizzle, "Flirt with the camera."

For GKatt, we allow the smile go and went instead for the classic GQ look.

Though it's mandatory to take the serious portraits, it'south also overnice to have a few more than playful ones. These ones are all fun.

When I finally realized that I had been shooting on the "wrong" settings all afternoon, we went back to our commencement location and shot a few more with my intended settings. I probably should have locked in the ISO at 100 and taken the pictures at a faster speed. Ane of these days I'll recollect to check every setting.

Notice how the rocks in the groundwork are in focus every bit opposed to the earlier photo where they were non. Neither method is wrong. It's entirely up to personal preference. Which do you like better?
For these portraits, I chose not to worry with a flash. Overall, I think the pictures turned out well. For some of them, nonetheless, our optics are adumbral and would have benefited from a low-level wink.
